Borrowed from a Turkic language, ultimately from Proto-Turkic *alma. Compare Chuvash улма (ulma) and Tatar алма (alma). Cognates include Komi-Zyrian улмӧ (ulmö), Eastern Mari олма (olma) and Hungarian alma.
