Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *jäŕ-kə, from Proto-Finno-Permic [Finno-Volgaic] *jäwrä, borrowed either from Proto-Balto-Slavic *jaurā (compare Lithuanian jáura (marshland, bog)) or from earlier Proto-Indo-European *yewHr-. Cognates include Finnish järvi, Northern Sami jávri, Eastern Mari ер (jer).

      He saw two boats standing by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
