From Proto-Turkic *yok-karï (upper; upward), from *yok (up, upward; upper; upland). *-karï is an aditive (directional) affix.

Cognate with Kipchak یوقاری (yoqarï), iochari (as recorded in Codex Cumanicus), Old Anatolian Turkish یوقارو (yoqaru), Kazakh жоғары (joğary), Kyrgyz жогору (jogoru), Southern Altai јоор (ǰoor, wound in back of horse), јогор (ǰogor), Uzbek yuqori, Azerbaijani yuxarı, Turkish yukarı (high. upper); Khakas чоғар (çoğar, West; upper), Yakut соҕуруу (soğuruu, South), etc.
