Etymology
[edit]Of unclear origin. Presumed by J. J. Mikkola to be borrowed from Old Norse jarðhús (“underground room”).[1][2] Compare jǫrð (“earth, modern Icelandic jörð”) and hús (“house”). This derivation has however been doubted on phonetic[3] and semantic[4] grounds.
