From Middle Median *arītaxōδ, from Proto-Iranian *riHtáh (face) (whence Sogdian 𐽀𐼷𐽂 (ryt /⁠rīt, rēt⁠/, face)) + *xáwdaH (cover) (whence Old Persian 𐎧𐎢𐎭𐎠 (x-u-d-a /⁠xaudā⁠/, hat), Old Armenian խոյր (xoyr)).
