Etymology

From *նաւաստ (*nawast, navigation) +‎ (-i), from Middle Iranian *nāvvast, from *nāv- (ship) + *vasti- / *vasta- (driving, leading), from *vad- (to lead). The first is cognate with նաւ (naw), the second part is related to վարեմ (varem).
