An onomatopoeic formation, possibly inherited from Proto-Indo-European and cognate with Old Armenian փչեմ (pʻčʻem, to blow, breathe), Persian پوک (puk, wind from the throat in blowing a fire), Ancient Greek φῦσα (phûsa, bellows)
