Etymology
[edit]Via some Aramaic form (compare Mishnaic Hebrew בירוס, Classical Syriac ܒܝܪܘܢܐ) from Byzantine Greek βίρρος (bírrhos), from Latin birrus, from Gaulish, from Proto-Celtic *birros (“short”). Doublet of بِرْنِيطَة (birnīṭa).
