Etymology

From Old Anatolian Turkish, a Turkic onomatopoeia, Karakhanid [script needed] (tüwek) in Dīwān Luḡāt at-Turk meaning a blowpipe shooting pebbles against birds (imagined as sounding tüf!). Modern cognates include Azerbaijani tüfəng, Turkmen tüpeň and Nogai туьбек (tübek).
