From Middle Persian [script needed] (wzγ /⁠wazaγ⁠/, frog). Akin to Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬰𐬀𐬖𐬁 (vazaγā, lizard, frog), compare وزغه (vazağe, small lizard), and to Old Armenian Վազգէն (Vazgēn).
