From Middle Persian kntn' (kantan, to dig, raze, destroy), from Old Persian 𐎣𐎴- (kan-, to dig), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kan- (to dig). Cognate with Sanskrit खन् (khan, to dig), Avestan 𐬐𐬀𐬥- (kan-, to dig).
