Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *gaHtʰás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gaHtʰás. Cognate with Avestan 𐬔𐬁𐬚𐬁 (gāθā, form of strophe, metre, namely the collections of Zarathustra's songs). The same PII root *gaH- gave गायति (gā́yati, to sing).
