Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀚𑀕𑁆𑀕𑀤𑀺 (jaggadi), from Sanskrit जाग्रति (jāgrati) (compare जागर्ति (jāgarti)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ger-. Compare Punjabi ਜਾਗਣਾ (jāgṇā) / جاگنا (jāgnā), Gujarati જાગવું (jāgvũ), Nepali जाग्नु (jāgnu), Sindhi جَاڳَڻُ / जाॻणु (jāɡ̈aṇu), Bengali জাগা (jaga), Assamese জাগা (zaga), Marathi जागणे (j̈āgṇe), Konkani जाग्चे (zāgce).
