Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀰𑀸𑀳𑀼 (śāhu), with reinforcement of aspiration and extension after loss of final vowel, from Sanskrit साधु (sādhu), whose meaning shifted from "successful" to "successful merchant" to "merchant". Doublet of সাউ (śau) and সাধু (śadhu).
