  1. the original or natural form of anything, natural condition or state, original or primary substance.
  2. cause, origin, source.
  3. nature, character, constitution, disposition, temper, temperament.
  4. nature, (as opp. to Purusha or Spirit) the creation, universe.
  5. (mathematics) a coefficient, multiplier.
  6. the common people (collectively).
  7. (grammar) the crude elementary or radical form of a word, a primitive word root, radix, radical, etymon.
  8. a metre having 21 syllables per line of verse.
