Borrowed from Classical Syriac ܝܫܘܥ (īšōʿ), in turn from Biblical Hebrew יֵשׁוּעַ (yēšûaʿ, Jesus), a syncopated form of יְהוֹשֻׁעַ (yəhôšuaʿ, Joshua).
