From Proto-Tai *naːkᴰ (otter). Cognate with Lao ນາກ (nāk), Ahom 𑜃𑜀𑜫 (nak), Tai Dam ꪙꪱꪀ, Tày nạc, Zhuang nag (as in duznag). Compare Proto-Hlai *hnaːk (otter), Proto-Austronesian *Sanaq (otter) (whence Paiwan sanaq, Kavalan sani).
