From Pali mettā (love, amity, sympathy, friendliness); compare Sanskrit मैत्र (maitra, friendly, benevolent). Cognate with Lao ເມດຕາ (mēt tā), ᦵᦙᧆᦎᦱ (medṫaa), Khmer មេត្រី (meitrəy), មេត្តា (meittaa).
