From Proto-Southwestern Tai *tomᴬ¹ (“mud; earth”), from Proto-Tai *tɯmᴬ (“soil”). Cognate with Thai ตม (dtom), Ahom 𑜄𑜤𑜪 (tuṃ), Zhuang doem.
