From Proto-Indo-European *h₂énkos, whence also Ancient Greek ἄγκος (ánkos, bend), ἄγκιστρον (ánkistron, fishhook). Cognate with Mingrelian ანკეცი (anḳeci), Laz ანკესი (anǩesi), and Svan ანკე̄ს (anḳēs).
