Etymology 1

First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean  (Yale: woyn).

Originally the adnominal form of the now lost Middle Korean adjectival verb 외다 (Yale: woyta) "to be wrong"; compare to 오른 (oreun), English right.
