Inherited from Proto-Turkic *bialïk (city, fortress). Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (balïq, town), Karakhanid بَلِقْ (balïq, stronghold, town). Compare Mongolian ᠪᠠᠯᠭᠠᠰᠤ (balɣasu, city), a Turkic borrowing.
