Etymology 2

Coined in 1755 by Markus Herz, father of Friedrich Accum, as his new surname when he converted from Judaism to Christianity. From Hebrew עכו״ם (“heathen, non-Jew”). Spelling influence by, or even a pun on, the placenames under etymology 1 is possible as the family was from northwestern Germany (though not from the immediate neighbourhood of East Frisia).
