Deverbal from baatschen, from late Middle High German patschen, *batschen (to smack, slap), of onomatopoeic origin (compare German patschen). Possibly reinforced by or conflated with German Peitsche (whip), from eastern Middle High German peitsche, from Old Czech bīč.
