Reduced Anglicized form of Scottish Gaelic Mac Gille Fhaoláin and Irish Mac Giolla Fhaoláin (son of the servant of (saint) Faolán), a personal name thought to be a diminutive of Irish faol (wolf). Compare the surname McClellan.
