Etymology[edit]
From Ancient Greek μακάρων νῆσοι (makárōn nêsoi, “Islands of the Blessed”) + -ia, from μάκαρ (mákar, “fortunate”) + νῆσος (nêsos, “island”). Unrelated to English macaroni.
