Uncertain. Perhaps from a pre-latin substrate or from Proto-West Germanic *brasa, from a Proto-Germanic root related to *brewwaną (“to boil, seethe, brew”). However, compare Proto-Indo-European *bʰres- (“to crack, break, burst”).
