From Proto-Indo-European *ḱem-tér- (down, back, along, over, through), from *ḱóm (beside, near, by, with). Cognate with Latin contrā (back, against), Old Welsh cant (with, at, along); > Modern Welsh gan (with, by), Ancient Greek κατά (katá, downwards).
