Expanded from earlier Schwieger (mother-in-law), from Old High German swigar, from Proto-Germanic *swegrō, from Proto-Indo-European *sweḱruh₂- (woman's mother-in-law) (compare *swéḱuros (woman's father-in-law)). By surface analysis, schwieger- +‎ Mutter.
