Potential sum of parts[edit]

Noticing that @Equinox suggested this is SOP, I would point out a remark I overheard, that because of the unseasonably warm weather "there was no real fall foliage to speak of". Clearly it was fall, and there was foliage, but "fall foliage" has a narrower meaning (i.e. the fried egg test). Kiwima (talk) 01:56, 14 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Kiwima: I still think it's SoP. I could say "today is Monday but there was no Monday backlog to deal with" (at my work), or "it's summer but we've had no real summer weather". These are social expectations, they are not idioms. Equinox 02:00, 12 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
I understand your point, but I still think the fried egg rule applies here. For example, here in New Zealand, most of our native trees are evergreens. They have foliage (unlike evergreens that have needles), but we do not get any fall foliage, and there is no expectation of fall foliage. No one would say that the fall foliage of New Zealand natives is green. Kiwima (talk) 05:40, 12 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I'm not going to challenge the entry. Just an observation. Thanks. Equinox 00:35, 16 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
