"Mã" is often said to mean "horse" when ma/mà/mả/mã/má/mạ is used as an example of tones in Vietnamese. However, this is one of the more obscure meanings of "mã", not unlike saying that "hydro-" means "water" in English. It does, but you wouldn't go somewhere and order a glass of "hydro-". – Minh Nguyễn 💬 23:28, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
- A "only in compounds" context tag may be used in these cases, with the meaning still shown as normal, e.g. dục, đẩu. It could be templatised. Wyang (talk) 08:31, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
- That would go for almost any reading, though. I think it's better to direct readers to the character entries via
{{sino-vietnamese reading of}}, to reduce the overhead of maintaining Sino-Vietnamese reading sections. - We'd have to list compounds in both scripts on the character pages then. Though someone looking for Bạch Mã might look first at bạch or mã but not be brave enough to venture into the land of CJKV character entries.
