- I suspect that what is meant is “To become entangled”, which need not have an element of force, but is usually unintentional. It is a figurative use of sense #1. You will typically find this in the combination tangled in, as in tangled in a web of love and betrayal. In sense #3, the actor is seeking the situation, so in my mind it is a distinct sense. This active sense typically uses the combination tangle with, as seen in both usexes. --Lambiam 23:09, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
- If so, it's been written wrongly from a subject/object viewpoint: if one is tangled by being forced, then to tangle is to force, not to be forced. (Quite a common error.) Equinox ◑ 23:11, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
RFV-failed - There is no evidence of an intransitive sense like this. I suspect that Equinox got it right, and this is just confusion with the last sense. Kiwima (talk) 19:42, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
