From Italian bùssola (compare French boussole), from Vulgar Latin *buxula, a diminutive form of Late Latin buxis (box), from Ancient Greek πυξίς (puxís, boxwood box, box), from πύξος (púxos, boxwood). Apparently influenced by Spanish bruja (witch).
