From Vulgar Latin cathégra (attested in Pompeiian inscriptions), variant of Latin cathedra (seat), from Ancient Greek κᾰθέδρᾱ (kathédrā, chair of a teacher, throne), from κᾰτᾰ́ (katá, down) + ἕδρᾱ (hédrā, seat). Compare Piedmontese cadrega, Romansch chadregia, Ladin cariega, and Venetian carega.
