English
[edit]Verb
[edit]clew up (third-person singular simple present clews up, present participle clewing up, simple past and past participle clewed up)
- (UK, informal) To finish up or to tidy up, as in the tie up a sail on a sailing boat, the clew being a part of the structure holding the sail. Comes from the nautical term "clew".
- Synonym: (UK) finish up
Usage notes
[edit]- Often used to describe the last bits of a task about to be done, as in "I'm just clewing up". Or once done, one can say, "I'm all clewed up."
- Not to be confused with the American usage of the term "clued up", which means to have been filled in on some knowledge or facts ("clues") about something.
