1. Bituminous coal which is suitable for making into coke, for example for use in steel manufacture.

     All grades of coal, deepmined and opencast, are produced, and Durham coking coal is unsurpassed for iron and steel making and is world-famous.

     Among the numerous types of vehicles required are special 33½-ton vacuum-braked hopper wagons for iron ore imported at Newport docks, 21-ton vacuum-braked wagons for coking-coal and 56-ton vehicles for slabs and coils.
