In Finnish texts in this form at least from 1887 (August Ahlqvist, Suomen kielen rakennus - "Of the structure of the Finnish language") < Swedish diftong (1696) < Latin diphthongus < Ancient Greek δίφθογγος (díphthongos, “two sounds”)
