Etymology

From Old Danish etærkop, ederkoppæ; ultimately from Proto-Germanic *aitrą (poison) + *kuppaz (something round). Identical in formation to English attercop and Old Swedish eterkoppe (whence dialectal Swedish etterkoppa).
