Etymology

[edit]

From Middle High German her ümbe. Compare German herum, Dutch erom. The original sense “around” developed into “back” (as in “come back”, “give back”). The further development into “again, once more” is the same as in German wieder and English again. Compare also the enhanced forms German wiederum, Dutch wederom.
