From Old Norse æfinligr, an enlargement of earlier *æfinn from Proto-Germanic *aiwīnaz, cognate with Old High German ēwīn, Gothic 𐌰𐌹𐍅𐌴𐌹𐌽𐍃 (aiweins). Derived from the noun *aiwaz (age, eternity).
