From fero (iron) +‎ vojo (way), a calque of German Eisenbahn. Compare Yiddish אײַזנבאַן (ayznban), Italian ferrovia, French voie ferrée, Spanish ferrovía, Russian желе́зная доро́га (želéznaja doróga), Hungarian vasút, Latvian dzelzceļš, Japanese 鉄道 (tetsudō).
