Danish[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From Old Danish forta, fortæ (“space around a horse”), the same word as forte. A compound of for- and Old Norse tá n (“path”), from Proto-Germanic *tanhwą. Cf. Finnish tanhua (“stockyard”), which was borrowed from Proto-Norse or Proto-Germanic. The noun itself is derived from the adjective Proto-Germanic *tanhuz (“tough”).
