Etymology

Borrowed from German Genom, coined by German botanist Hans Winkler in 1920 as a blend of Gen (gene) +‎ Chromosom (chromosome).[1] By surface analysis, blend of gène +‎ chromosome.[2] Spelling altered by association with the surface analysis.
