From Proto-West Germanic *ganēþu, from Proto-Germanic *nēþō-, from Proto-Indo-European *net- (to favor, protect). Akin to Old Norse náð and Gothic 𐌽𐌹𐌸𐌰𐌽 (niþan, to help).
