From Middle Welsh gwasgawd, gwasgaut, from Proto-Brythonic *gwoskọd, from Proto-Celtic *uɸo-skātu. Cognate with Irish foscadh (“shelter; shade”). By surface analysis, go-, gwo-, gwa- (“under”) +‎ ysgod (“shade”).
