[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain. Perhaps a derivative or alteration of earlier hafettan, from Proto-West Germanic *habattjan, from Proto-West Germanic *hab, *habu (“lift, lifting”) + *-attjan. Equivalent to *hafu + -ettan.
Alternatively, an alteration of āfētian (“to stomp with the feet, applaud, praise”). Possibly a merger of both theories.
