From colloquial Old Church Slavonic *харьнъ (*xarĭnŭ) equivalent to Macedonian арен (aren) and Bulgarian ха́рен (háren, good, likeable) from Ancient Greek χάρις (kháris, goodwill) + Proto-Slavic *-ьnъ +‎ -ic.
