From Proto-Hmong-Mien *hməŋH (“night”). Cognate with Iu Mien hmuangz; outside of Hmong-Mien, cognate with Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-mun (“dark”) (whence Old Chinese 昏 (OC *hmɯːn, “dusk, dark”)) and *muːŋ ~ r/s-muːk (“misty; dark”) (whence 矇 (OC *moːŋ, “blind; dark”) and perhaps 冥 (OC *meːŋ, “dark; deep; underworld”)).
