From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *(ma-)qitəm. Compare Acehnese itam, Bikol Central itom, Cebuano itom, Coastal Kadazan oitom, Hiligaynon itom, Malay hitam, Minangkabau hitam, Pangasinan itom, Tetum metan, Waray-Waray itom, West Coast Bajau irom, and Yami sirem.
