Hungarian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

köszönet (thanks) +‎ -et (accusative suffix) +‎ mond (to say), literally to say thanks

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): [ˈkøsønɛtɛtmond]

Verb

[edit]

köszönetet mond

  1. (slightly formal) to thank (someone: -nak/-nek, (optionally) for something: -ért)
    Synonyms: köszön, megköszön
A szervezők köszönetet mondtak a tolmácsoknak. The organizers thanked the interpreters.
Az elnök köszönetet mondott a résztvevők észrevételeiért.The chairman thanked the participants for their comments.

Usage notes

[edit]

This phrase is the only option when the thing being thanked for is not specified (for example because it is obvious to the listener/s), unless the place of the object is filled with a generic word like minden(t) (everything), which makes the verb (meg)köszön grammatically possible. However, köszönetet mond can also be used when the object is made explicit, especially on ceremonial occasions.

Conjugation

[edit]
  • For the verb, see mond.
  • The inflected noun remains unchanged.
